It is our pleasure to welcome you to our fifth round of "Becoming aWebhead" (BaW). Our workshop officially begins on Jan. 14. However,since we already have some registrations, we decided to send this message to let you know we are here, working on getting our everythingready and accepting requests to join the workshop.

As you have probably realized, we will be using different web tools during the six weeks that you can start exploring while waiting for the workshop to start. The purpose of each of these tools is the following:

Yahoo Group: our "communications center" for general communication among all participants, essentially, email messaging http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/baw08

Wiki: where you find all the information about the session (syllabus,weekly activities, live sessions, hints, glossary, etc) and where you will also be "adding your own content" (your intros, products you createduring the sessions, etc). http://baw-08.pbwiki.com The wiki password for the pages where you can add content is: bawpart (very original ;-)) Make sure that the pages you are going to edit have this root URL: http://baw08participants.pbwiki.com

Blog: to discuss the weekly live guest presentations http://baw08.wordpress.com

Forum: to discuss our suggested weekly readings http://www.hostingphpbb.com/forum/baw08.html You can register to this forum, to be able to add your comments.

For starters, we suggest three additional tasks:

1. Complete a diagnostic survey at: http://baw-08.pbwiki.com/survey

2. Take a good look at the "Hints" page: http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/webheads/baw08/hints.htm It will probably save you initial messages with questions about YahooGroups and other things. It's really useful. We'll be updating it along the 6 weeks of the workshop.

For this workshop, we have invited previous BaW participants to moderate and co-moderate. They will be replying to your messages and helping you throughout the workshop. Teresa and I will also be participating, but we have decided to give them the chance to take a very active part in BaW08, so we will be more in the background, only surfacing in a timely fashion. Welcome one and all, old friends from previous BaWs and colleagues/friends-to-be! :-) From the very first BaW in 2004, I have completed an Excel file - coined Excel(lent) file last year (by whom?! oh these "ageing" neurones!!!) - about participants and members. No... it's not "Big Brother" is watching you! It's basically to have a good idea of the countries, continents and time zones of our participants. And also of intros sent so far (9Jan08 at 17:00 GMT) we have 118 participants. The rest are moderators/mods, guest speakers and members of other EVO workshops that signed in to ours.

This is the info I have so far on 84 of the "participants" from 39 countries. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!

We can already say that we are "a mini-UN" and I hope doing much better work for world peace and understanding.

We have participants from Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Europe, N. America and S. America. We don't span all the continents yet, because there are no participants from Australia or New Zealand, as far as I know.

And, if my calculations are correct, we already span 18 time zones: GMT -8 (California and Oregon, USA) to GMT +9 (Japan). You can see how compicated it is for everyone to join in live/synchronous presentations by our guest speakers. That's why we always record everything and upload the audio and text files, as well as the presentations.That's all for now. Though I was organized, completing the database and getting together this info has taken some time. I will now give myself a nice afternoon snack. I think I deserve it. :-) Hope you all enjoy this journey across the world and through different cultures gathered together with one basic aim: to learn collaboratively and constructively how to use different communication tools that hopefully will make our teaching better, more motivating and enriching, and certainly globalized.

Isn't Cris Costa with us? or do you still count her as being from Portugal? I think you are counting country of residence, not origin, right? btw Bravenet offers a cute little widget called a "Guestmap". People canadd themselves to the map and include a greeting and their country's flag (I think the flag is a nice touch). I use it for my mixed ESL class here at the University of Maryland (on the class wiki). A downside is that there isan annoying welcome screen that pops up on top of the map and which is not easy to dispose of.Check out Bravenet's guestmap at http://bravenet.com/webtools/guestmap/

I consider the country where people are working. Cristina Costa is in England, but these stats I sent only refer to Baw08 "participants", not Baw08 mods or mods from other EVO workshops.

And the 85 participants I refered to a while ago, after including Kyi, are participants about whom I have data either from the registration process or the intro sent to the list.

So far we have 134 "approved" participants and 35 other type of members, adding up to 169. We used the Bravenet map in the first two rounds, I believe, and then moved to Frappr.

For five years now, at this time of the year, I get butterflies in mystomach when I read all the nice comments from previous participants andthe expectations of the new ones. It is a mixture of excitement andresponsibility. Then, I relax, because it is you, new and old participants who with your willingness to learn and share have made Baw successful, and this year, it seems we are having a great enthusiastic crowd ready to give Baw08 a go!

Behind curtains, a group of 13 dedicated professionals, the Baw08 team(all volunteers), is working tuning up the details for our grand opening on Jan 14. It is not only a work of creating pages, activities,contacting guest speakers, selecting readings, etc., it is also a rich learning experience regarding discussions on best approaches toe-learning in order to model them during the workshop. We are still one week from the real start, and we are all anxious to begin. So, I am going to graciously remind you of some tasks you can be completing in the mean time:

I am sure you are wondering "why so many photos?" We consider that photos are very important in online courses to give ideas a face. After a while, when you read a message from a participant, you have the mental image of the person, just as when you are on the phone, or reading a message from a person you know. In a nutshell, photos make the online experience more personal.

Since you are going to be writing on the wiki, I have created a"Playground" page, for you to practice using Pbwiki (our wikiprovider) if you have not worked with wikis before. The playground page is at:

Our group keeps growing :-)

As more participants get involved in adding photos, creating profiles in the wiki, etc., questions and doubts start to arise. This is the right time to start sharing and learning together. Sometimes, it will be one of the members of the BaW team who will reply, but as the workshop takes place, and you feel more comfortable, anybody in the group is entitled to reply to these messages. Usually, we have different solutions to a problem and this enriches our learning experience. This is a space for everybody to have his/her voice heard :-)

Therefore, it is important that you express your doubts and questions to this list, and not to me personally (through my e-mail or through the "contact the owner" link on the wiki. Of course, I can reply to these messages, but the whole group is missing a learning opportunity with each message I reply individually.

Btw, when the course officially starts, we will create a weekly thread summarizing the topics discussed in this group, and this document will be made available on the wiki.

I fixed your picture. The problem was that it was too big and you used the same parameters I have on my photo. I resized your picture, uploaded it again, andit is fine now :-)

Can you please help me out? I have just read the wikistyle tips and decided to improve the look of my profile box. I succeeded in creating a list of my IDs and applying a bold font. But as a result of my experiment, the profile box itself disappeared :-( No matter where I put these vertical bars, the box vanished. Where's the glitch?

Thank you for your help. But how did you rebuild my profile box? Did you just delete the bulleted list of my ids and put the vertical bars in place? Or was it something else? When I was creating the bulleted list, all the rows started to live their own lives. I'm just wondering if it is possible to have both a list and a profile box :-) Anyway, thanks.

A while ago, in my "statistical overview", I forgot to mention that 30 some participants have introduced themselves through the YG mailing list, but only four of you have inserted your intro and photo in the Baw08 wiki. (And there are lovely photos in the YG.)

So... I advise you to do that before next week to avoid a possible "wiki jam" in the Participants Gallery!!!Don't be afraid. Try it out first in the Playground, if you wish. You will have a lot of "trial and error" and exploring to do in the next 6 weeks. That's part of learning in a fun way. Enjoy! :-)

The best way to learn something is to do it. That's what I tried. Perhaps some of you have seen what my profile box in PBwiki looked like before I asked for help. When I was working on improving the look of my profile box and was applying some of the wikistyle tips (I was arranging my IDs in a bulleted list), my profile box disappeared. Thanks to Fernanda, the profile box came back but without a bulleted list.

My questions are then:

1. Why did the box disappear?

2. Can I arrange my profile box with a bulleted list?

Though I toured Second Life a little, I often feel lost in there. I am not good with arrows (I am not a gamer) and I do not know this virtual environment well enough. But my question is about how I can transfer (or upload) my avatar (image) from SL to PBwiki page. And one more thing. I was trying to open the http://www.fl.nl.pt/unil/pol7/pol7_txt8.pdf page, it won't open. Instead the error message pops up (something about Premature End of Data). Could you please explain what's the problem?

Well, I'm out of my questions for the moment. Looking forward to hearing from you and learning how to deal with all these situations :-)

Let me try to answer some of your questions.

For a table to show on pbwiki, you should not click on enter to create a new paragraph, just add the code

and keep typing on the same line. Otherwise, the table does not show. Every time you add

the text that follows will show on the next line. So if you have a bulleted list, you should do something like this...

There are 2 communications modes:

• asynchronous

  * synchronous

  I hope that what I am writing shows up how I wrote it. If not, I will look for the way to show it to you.

  Regarding your avatar image from SL, you might want to take a screenshot while you are at SL, then convert it to the jpg format and to the size you want it, to then upload it to the wiki.

  Finally, if you tell me where this file is located (what page): http://www.fl.nl.pt/unil/pol7/pol7_txt8.pdf I will be able to tell you what´s happening.

I hear and feel frustration in your email and wanted to just tell you that error messages and other frustrations happen all the time so dont think it is you and the good news is there is always someone who can fix it. I have found that online avicionados and especially the WIA moderators are kind, understanding, and so knowledgeable that they can probably fix anything.

There is a main wiki - baw08 - just for the coordinators and mods, and only we can edit it. The participants baw08 wiki, the one participants deal with, is embedded in the main wiki and that's the one with the pw below.

Your profile is not in the wiki yet. The link is http://baw08participants.pbwiki.com/ you just have to click on edit. The password to the wiki is bawpart. What I did the first time I had to work with wiki was to copy what my colleagues had done (the codes and symbols and all that). I have already posted the lind to your blog on the Side Bar under TOOLS CREATED BY PARTICIPANTS.

As soon as you are invited to collaborate on a wiki, it shows on your "my.pbwiki" page. I have never had any problem, but others including Sasha and Tere have had some problems, and they have solved it by loging out and in again.

I saw that your picture is really in the map, but it is not in the wiki image files. Why don´t you try to do what I told Marcia to do. I like flicker because the thumbnail images are only 100 X 75. So try this:

1. Upload it to flickr http://www.flickr.com/

2. Click on the picture

3. Click on the icon on the top that reads ALL SIZES

4. Click on thumbnails and copy the URL code that appears under the embedding code.

5. Paste the code in the wiki space reserved for the picture.

Hmmm ... I've tried to post my profile on the wiki and everything was going fine ... but then something happened and everything disappeared, all the profiles! Sorry guys! Didn't mean to!

Don´t worry it can be fixed. Let me share some ideas on editing wikis with you. The best way to work editing wikis is to always PREVIEW before SAVE. Everytime you make some change click on the PREVIEW buttom so that you can see how it looks. This way, if there is a problem you can always back.

Don´t panick ;-) Everything is back to normal. Ireverted the page to a previous version, and now you can see all the profiles again :-) Without noticing you might have highlighted all the content on the page and click on the back key and everything was deleted. But that's the wonders of wikis, you can always go back to previous versions of the page. Every little edition keeps in the history of each of the pages on the wiki :-)

Thank you. oh it was you who did it. very nice. Actually I followed the instuctions of jose and created in flickr.com and when I wanted to copy my url reading http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2185/2188018994_a8ed076d40_t.jpg in wiki and when I opened the edit page it said Jose is working and now again when I tried somebody was working and it asked me to steal lock. When I went through the homepage I found my photo there. You have done a great job.

My doubts and questions:

1. When somebody edits, is it not possible for the others to edit , and if possible how to do it

2. How did you take a thumbnail from frappr map and uploaded it?

It's happened again! I posted my profile and it was ok. Then I wanted to add my photo, put the URL, previewed and it was ok. And when I saved it some of the stuff (including my profile) didn't turn up. I was careful not to highlight anything and click on anything unnecessarily. What is going wrong? Would appreciate some help!

Thank you very much for your quick response. I did look at the tutorial and after that I did verything right, but when I saved the changes someone stole my lock as it took more than five minutes to do so. I'm not happy, but I already know what to do so I'll wait and try again.

I am glad you are now clear on what to do :-) We need to be patient because we will have what Terecalls "wiki jam" due to the number of people trying toedit the wiki. It is a good idea to write what you want to post on a notepad or on Word so you don´t loose all what you have written, in case someone steals the lock.

If when we try to edit someone else is editing, we should wait until the page is free again. Of course sometimes, when we see that it has been busy for morethan 30 minutes, we could think that the person who was editing forgot to leave the page. In that case, itis ok to steal the lock. So, if you see that you are spending too much time in your edition, it is advisable to save before continuing.

I see that some kind person put my photo into the participants gallery for me. Thank you! I messed around with my photo trying to do it myself - then gave up (I'm ashamed) What perplexed me the most was that I didn't know how to find the URL for my photo. Also, is the URL just my e-mail address and if so, this yahoo one or my 'normal' one?

Your URL is not your email address. The latter is just for mail, while the URL is for a page on the Web. So if you put your photo on a certain site online, you'll get a URL or Web address, comparable to the snail mail address we have at home. URL stands for Universal Resource Locator. It's a "unique" address.

My guess is this kind person taking care of your photo was our Daf. :-)

Your photo's url is the adress where your photo is located online.

Here's how you find it, if your photo is located in our wiki:

After uploading your photo to the files section of the wiki and clicking on "edit this page", you see your photo on the right side of the page. Put your cursor where you want your picture to show, and click on your photo; the url will show between these signs < >. Or right-click on your photo to copy its URL in brackets.

Some others have their photos hosted on other sites and they simply provided the urls of those sites (e.g. Jose Antonio on Flickr)

The URL of a photo or any image can be found like this:

1. Click on the photo (it has to be online somewhere) using the right button of your mouse

2. A pop-up window will show with different alternatives

3. Select: properties (usually at the bottom)

4. Another pop up window will show and you will see the URL of the photo. These URLs usuallly have the ending .jpg or .gif

5. Copy this URL

5. When you click on "edit page" on the wiki, you need to copy the url between brackets URL

Perhaps someone can help me resize my picture. Through a great deal of trial and error, I finally figured out how to find the url of my picture and upload it. The only problem is that it is too big. The tutorial on resizing wasn't helpful because I can't use the easy thumbnails program. It requires windows or vista and I am working on a Mac (OS X 10.5.1). I used iphoto and chose "small", but can't find an option for anything smaller than what I have. Any help would be appreciated.

I fixed it for you. Since you said you couldn't ruse the resizing program, I did another way. Let me tell you how I did and you can try it next time. I am sure there will be lots of occasions to use picture. First I upload the picture to flickr then I clicked on the picture and then on the icon all sizes that appear on the top and clicked thumbnails. Next I copied the url of the picture and pasted it to the wiki.

I had that with mine but could not remeber all the steps. Next time you and I will be able to help other people.

you can use Automator to make a plugin for Finder, so that you can just right-click a photo file and resize it to whatever resolution you want.for automator, open it and drag these into the construction area:

How are you doing. It is great to have other Brazilians in the group. About the the picture, let me teach my path.

1. Upload it to flickr http://www.flickr.com/

2. Click on the picture

3. Click on the icon on the top that reads ALL SIZES

4. Click on thumbnails and copy the URL code that appears under the embedding code.

5. Paste the code in the wiki space reserved for the picture.

I would like to revisit some information that I have mentioned in some other posts:

1. If you forget the password to the wiki, you can find it in a document located in the "Files" section of this YG.

2. The best image resizer I have found is Easy Thumbnails. It is free, user-friendly, keeps the ratio of your photo, and it lowers the weight of your picture. It is also important to know, that a photo for the web should not be more than 100 kb, otherwise it will make the page to be very slow to open. Regarding thumbnails for the profile, they should be no more than 100 x 100 (no more than 6 kb).

3. There are two tutorials regarding adding images to our wiki, one about uploading images to the pbwiki, and the other on how to use Easy Thumbnails. Both tutorials can be found at: http://baw-08.pbwiki.com/Tutorials

I don't know what photo editor you have on your computer. In case you have Microsoft Office Picture Manager, you can resize your pic on your computer before uploading the image. You open the picture in the photo editor and in the top menu line you choose Picture. Click on it and then select the option Resize. In the right-hand part of the window you will see different parameters such as Original size and New size. Make the new size approx.100x100. You can change the size by decreasing the percentage of the original height and width. That's what I did.

In case you don't have this photo editor you can do what Dafne suggests:

Another easy way without using any application is this:

1. Upload your photo to the Photo section of this Yahoo Group. Yahoo will create a thumbnail

2. Put your cursor over the photo

3. Click with the right button of your mouse

4. A pop up window will show different alternatives. Select: "save picture as"

5. Save the picture to your computer

6. Upload it to the wiki

7. Use it on your profile (this photo will have a goodsize for the profile)

We cannot use the URLs generated by YG because ours is a private group and the photos will not show anywhere else.

I am José Antônio from Brazil. First, I would like to welcome you to the group. Then, I would also like to thank you for the "great professionals". You are right, this group has lots of great professionals and you must be a great professional too, because you are interested in learning, and that is what makes this group special. Everyone here has something to share and is willing to learn a bit more with the others.

I have been using blogs extensively in my class. I have found it a very useful tool to help my students develop their writing skills. Something I have tried is designing written tasks based on what we are studying in class. These are some examples of a 2nd semester group of students. One about family http://thomasja.wordpress.com/2007/10/23/my-family/ Another one on their neighborhood http://thomasja.wordpress.com/2007/09/27/my-neighborhood/ in these entries, I provided them with a model paragraph and they departed from there. I did not make a point of correcting their mistakes, if they called and asked for feedback, I would give it to them.

With a group of intermediate students, as we were learning passive voice, I asked them to create news stories, illustrate them and then I posted them to the blog and had them write an update on the story. Let me address your question is a more organized fashion. Here are some things I have learned about blogging.

Elicit your students own ideas by asking questions, posting pictures or videos. Always brainstorm blog activities before having students post comments or create blog entries. This way when your students are in front of the computer, they know what they are expected to do. The focus should be more on content then on form. If correction is an issue, you can have some peer correction. If they write freely, they are more fluent. In my experience, shy students are generally the ones who blossom in blogs. It is good to give students feedback on their posts or comments. You can do that in written form or verbally in class. It is important to let them know you read what they wrote. It is also important to have an audience for your blog. The idea twining projects (having another class participating) is always good. I am a strong believer in Connectivism. So, I think you should have diversity in your blogs, having different levels posting instead of creating a blog to one level only.

This are just some hints that came to my mind now. I am sure other members will add something.

Just one correction, about item 7. About having one blog for one class. There is no problem with that. What I meant was that diversity is important. There should be diversity of tasks, media used and audience. To guarantee audience, you can have them read posts and reply to their peers. If you happen to have a very small group of students, it is good to have other groups even if they are from different level involved to keep the diverse nature of the blog.

That was really quick and helpful advice! I wouldn't expect anyone toreply that quickly to my questions. Thanks very much again and hope to give you some feedback on the lesson plans you've just sent me. I guess monitoring what they're writing about is advisory as it's oneof the easiest way to get started with low-level English students. As for other different level students committing into blogging, I'm very very willing to do it because of the students' academic and behaviourist characteristics, that is to say, I've just started a blogwith a group with the biggest potential in the college and not the others whose behaviour and intelligence don't make it to this level of commitment. Anyway, I'd love to do it with all my classes but, firstly, we haven't got a fully equipped classroom with internet connection (Can you imagine it?) secondly, the other groups are not playable regarding carrying out diverse activities and thirdly, I'm just a nobody in English teaching with such IT resources as blogs.

I am glad you liked what I said. My promptness in responding is greatly due to the enthusiasm I have for blogs and I love helping people out if I can. You are right. Of course you have to cater to the needs of students. Internet connection can really be a problem in many schools. In the school where I work, we have a good computer lab with broadband connection. Even though, planning is necessary because there lots of teachers to use the computers and we have to plan activities well, brainstorming them in class and then when we get to the lab, we do the activities. Of course, those of us working with web 2.0 have to let go the "go to the lab and do grammar exercise" approach (what most of the teachers still do). Do not say you are a nobody in IT. You are already blogging and asking questions about it. The majority of teachers don´t even consider doing it.

First, read all the suggested material in our wiki. That will give you a theoretical background.

Second, I may add some timps because I am in the same situation "we haven't got a fully equipped classroom with internet connection (Can you imagine it?) " Yes, I can imagine. Well, this is a disadvantage because you cannot show students what a blog exactly is and that takes time without a computer - I mean when students blog from their homes or cybercafes. We imagine that people ( specially teenagers) are familiar with the Internet, but the truth is ( at least that is what happens in my country) that they only chat, have a photolog and look up info for their homework ( most of them "cut and paste").

Tips:

Be patient

Don´t get discouraged : remember you are teaching not only a language but also a new tool, and do not underestimate any subject.

A good resource for writing is the British Council Newsletter.

I think it's very appropriate to say that it's Bailey, the excited Webhead dog, "warming up" for the EVO kickoff... :-) Anyway, what else could he do but run around excitedly to "warm up" in the midst of so much snow??!!
