Second Life: Tour

On this page we will post important information for the tour we are preparing for Second Life. Tentative time for the tour: week 4 or 5

Immediate Steps

I have created a table in the YG database section for those interested in visiting Second Life. This is what you need to do if you want to be in the SL tour:

  • First of all, make sure your computer meets all the technical requirements:

http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php (special attention should be paid to the graphic card). If your system does not meet the requirements, you won´t be able to get to SL, or you will be frustrated if able to connect. I am making this clear to avoid frustrations ;-)

  • register in the SL site at

http://www.secondlife.com,

  • create your avatar

  • dowload the program

  • add yourself to the database in our YG

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/baw08/database

  • Take some time to go to the Orientation Island in SL, to get the basic skills (Orientation Island is the place you arrive once you create your avatar and connect to SL for the first time)

The first one shows you how to zoom in. This will help you read from the board more easily and also help you to hear the person speaking, by zooming in on their avatar.

This second one will help you to listen to the audio and video media files, by adjusting the volume levels and turning down the background / ambient sounds.

This one shows how you can join in pairs or groups, so that you only hear the people you are working with.

This one shows how you can change the volume of the other speakers or mute them. It also shows you how to order the list of active speakers so that they don't move around.

This one shows you how to create a notecard to take notes

This one shows how to copy notes from Second Life notecards into a Word document (if you want to keep copies of your notes outside of SL)

This one shows you how to share and pass notecards to other avatars / students.

Trip Instructions

1. We will be doing two trips due to the number of participants that who have added themselves to the database

We want to have a first trip with complete beginners and a second one with those who have more experience. However, this all depends on the number of participants who can make it at the time we have set the first trip:

Saturday, Feb 16 at 17 GMT

Please, write your name on the list at this page if you can make it:

2. Important information:

If you have not created your account for SL yet, do so, and after downloading the application, use this URL to get to SL. It will take you to a much nicer place than the default one, and it is especially created for educators. If you have already gotten out of the SL orientation Island, you can Teletransport there too. We will be meeting at this place, and will help those who are still in the SL orientation Island to TP there. This is the URL:

http://sl.nmc.org/join

You can check here what this island looks like

http://sl.nmc.org/2007/10/10/nmcs-orientation-island-honors-the-home-of-linden-lab/

In our tour we will first go to the Orientation Island to practice some of the SL skills, then we will attend two short talks with owners of SL educational spaces, and then we will show you some places you can visit, in fact we are planning a pair work ;-)

Remember to fill in your information, if you are planning to attend, here:
