We have 12 very dedicated moderators working with us, who will share the numerous tasks ahead on a weekly basis. They are Kat Urbaniak (Canada) and Sasha Sirk (Slovenia) in Week 1, Fernanda Rodrigues (Portugal), Dennis Oliver (Arizona, USA) and Jose Antonio (Brazil) in Week 2, Monica Veado (Brazil), Nelba Quintana (Argentina) and Jose Antonio (Brazil) in Week 3, Sharon Betts (Maine, USA) and Ibrahim Rustamov (Tajikistan) in Week 4, Cristina Costa (England), Ramona Dietrich (Portugal) and Elisabeth Fernandes (Japan) in Week 5, and Dafne (Venezuela) and Teresa (Portugal) in Week 6. As you can see, we are a very international group. We have been working together for some time to have everything in order and running smoothly as of today, Jan 14. We\'ve put a lot of enthusiasm and commitment into what we hope will be a very successful 6-week teacher development workshop on different Web 2.0 communication tools to enhance the teaching-learning process. We advise you to take one thing at a time and to only do what your availability permits. However, we know from experience that many participants get the \"BaW healthy virus\" in their system in the first few hours or days and start spending hours in front of the screen, to the point of neglecting husbands, wives and children. ;-) If this is already happening, you\'re in great company, because Daf and I have been infected very healthily for six years now and it\'s been a very gratifying ongoing \"learning collaboratively and in a fun way\" process. If you get this virus, you don\'t need to go to the doctor. But you may need to improve your time management skills. This is very addictive! We love it! So... try to follow the weekly activities, complete our Diagnostic Survey http://baw-08.pbwiki.com/survey, take part in the ongoing list discusions and participate in as many live/synchronous sessions as possible, such as those of our guest speakers. But there\'s no need to overdo it. All the materials will be online for the rest of the year. I\'d go as far as to say, forever... But first let me introduce myself: Dear webheads to be, I am really, really excited to be here.I am Cristina Costa and I am from Portugal. I used to work as an EFL teacher at the Portuguese Navy, but am now working as a Learning Technology Development Officer at the University of Salford, UK. As an EFL teacher I used to involve students in ICT activities. Currently I help academic staff in the efficient use of edu-technology I believe technology can help educators to develop more efficient strategies to involve students in learning situations, provided they don\'t try to replace the humanware with the software! :-) And that is what Weheads have taught me. I put my photo and message on the map, but when the balloon appears, it has \"Move marker\" and \"Edit...\" on it. I haven\'t seen that on anyone else\'s. How can I remove it? 2. My photo is too big for the Wiki Gallery. After reading several replies to other participants with the same problem, I understand that I need to use Thumbnails or Flicker to make it smaller. When I went to the sites given by Jose and others, I found out I have to download a program. Each time I download another program my computer gets slower and slower. I realize I\'ll need to download some programs for BaW 2008 and imagine I can uninstall them afterwards. Your suggestions/thoughts, please. 3. Ever since I put my introduction in the Wiki Gallery, I keep getting messages showing \"front page was just edited\" with other people\'s intros and red/green editing. So I can move my pin for example, but not anyone else\'s. 2. Do you use a pc? Do you Microsoft Picture Manager? This might already be on your computer. 3. When you added your profile to the wiki there was check box that if left checked means you get emails telling you when others make changes. I susggest you go to flickr and opne an account if you don´t have one. It is very useful and you can upload an unlimited number of pictures (i guess) and have them stored in the web and access them form anywhere and you od not need to download any program. After you have an account do the following: 1. Upload your picture to flickr. 2. once you see the picture on the flickr website click on it. 3. Above the picture you will see and icon that reads ALL SIZES click on it. 4. Next you will see some options of sizes, click on THUMBNAILS 5. Copy the URL that reads thumbnails and paste it to the wiki page. Remember to use [ ] brackets o enclose the url. I hope it can help. Please let me know if youhave any porblems. Edit page - choose the destination of the photo inserting the cursor, then on the right upload photo and use Thumbnail (top left of the file list) if it is too big. Also I haven\'t been able to find instructions about how to enter Skype text chat now that I\'ve installed Skype on my PC. I\'ve downloaded the Skype software and typed \'echo123\' to test my audio. I got a loud booming sound like a fire hydrant so is this okay, maybe just need to turn the volume down? I also tried to get a test call but it asked me to download credit in my account. What should I do? How do I check that my phone will work. I have a headset, will need to find out if works. christina

The biggest difference is the length of recording, which islimited to 15 mins on the freeware version, but I\'ve never made my student stalk on the phone for that long! It links nicely into Skype and gives a dialogue box when you start a conversation. The recordings areautomatically saved as mp3s and can be moved about wherever you want to put them. I tried PowerGrammo but didn\'t get along with it so well, maybe others here have had different experiences. I use XP SP2. I also haven\'t tried Audacity with Skype - I\'m not sure if it would pick up both sides ofthe conversation. It\'s a fantastic lesson tool if you can pull it off! Good luck! Richard

Hi Laurel,
The 12 noon GMT sessions at TI are the regular Webheads in Action session. We have been meeting therefor more than 8 years. These are not BaW sessions, but everybody is cordially invited to attend. We will have a BaW Tapped In session on Sunday, Jan 20 at 17:00GMT. We will make the chatlog available from our wiki Live Sessions page.
In a while you will get more information about this session at Tapped In.

While I was watching it I was wondering why it is still so difficult for educators and education policies to make the transition from the industrial age to the digital day. The way we learn is not the same way our grand parents and great-grand parents did. I used to say that my great-grandfather used to ride a donkey to work, my grandfather bought himself a motorbike and my father learned how to drive a car. These days I am flying more and more all the time to reach the places where I need to be. It is not only reflects the evolution we have gone thru but also the needs of today\'s society. So how can we accept it in education as well. My mum learned in a school where there were no books or notebooks, She wrote things down in a kind of blue hard stone (not sure what is the correct word in English), and had to develop memorization skills and techniques. My brother and myself always got new note books at the beginning of the year, where we could record information \"forever\" - we thought - and the kids these days are entering an age when they are given a laptop on their first year of school - well not quite so... But the thing is....why stop the evolution then. Progress should be embraced and not banned from school. This means it plays in your web browser without you having to download a big file. So sometimes the clip pauses to catch up with itself. And when you play you get an indication of how far along the clip is (the black line). If you click pause and allow the clip to all get there then it won\'tjump once you play it. I would love to find some good video clips that help ESL learners practice and modify real-life dialogs with folks everywhere. I had a very proficient student who wrote beautiful English and could handle herself in most situations. She got a job at the front desk of a utility company in El Paso, TX, and called me for help, help, help. She said she had not developed the skills of verbal self defense, as clients were in her face and blaming her for their troubles. Assertiveness dialogs would have been helpful to many of my students. Unfortunately work has taken over this last week and I\'ve not had asmuch time as I would like to get everything done andso It has all been left till the weekend. I would like to ask if anyone is using a Mac and not a windows PC? Going through all the tutorials and instructions that are given for PC users I am finding it a challenge to convert it to my Mac system. Is anyone else having this trouble? How are you dealing with it? Also, in trying to download my photo to the participants page all I can post is the URL and notthe photo. After following the instructions for selecting my photo and adding it to the upload and manage files page, then returning to edit the participants page, adding the URL to the area before my profile allocated for the photo and then saving, instead of a photo appearing all I can see is my URL. My advice: don\'t try to master everything that\'s presented; this will only lead to more and more frustration. Instead, try to take a quick look at the many wonderful resources that are presented, bookmark them or store their URLs in an\"Investigate Later\" file, and then move on. Remember that BaW08 is intended to be a survey--not a course in which you have to master each new thing that is presented. Use the new websites, applications, and activities as a way to establish a \"roadmap\" for your own journey of discovery and sharing after this seminar finishes. I have a PC as well as a Mac, but I use my Mac most of the time because I feel more comfortable with it and because my PC is not conveniently located in my office. For the most part, I\'m able to go through the tutorials and instructions just fine, but I do sometimes run into difficulties. Often, it\'s just a matter of modifying the instructions--for example, holding down control while you click to emulate a right click. When the instructions and tutorials that you see here don\'t make sense, do asearch for the application or activity and check to see whether or nota downloadable Mac version is available. NOTE 2: Sometimes the problem isn\'t actually PC vs Mac, but triggered by the browser that you\'re using. I normally use Camino, for example, but I know that some things (for example, Page Flakes) will not display on it. When that happens, I use another browser (Safari, I think, but I also have and use Omni Web, Firefox, Flock, Opera, and Netscape, andit could be one of them). NOTE 3: For some applications, there are \"translators\" available. Yahoo Messenger, for example, used to work on Macs, but it doesn\'t now. Instead, I use Adium: http://www.adiumx.com/ NOTE 4: You could also get a copy of Virtual PC; it will make most PC resources and activities readable and executable on a Mac. The only problem is that it\'s expensive. Jose Antonio came to my resue and explained how to use flickr to resize. I don\'t know how the other programs will work (since I haen\'t tried them all) but generally I find there\'s always another way around the problem. I use Firefox and have been very happy with it. Saving passwords

I have to admit that I was a little scary to see that there is soooo much information but I was fascinated at the same time. I can\'t really wait to be able to use at least one of all those tools. Anyway, I\'ve heard that there is either a program that you can download for free or a website where you can save all your passwords and so you need to remember only a single id and password to access all. At the same time, we provide self-access excercises for students to deal with their individual language problems. I teach English for architecture and urban planning (a4-skill ESP/EAP program), and all the courses are blended; however, the way they are designed alllows them to be taken completely online. Those students who get a good grade (4-5 over 5 in all the skills) are exempted from this course, they go to course 2. Then during the first trimester we help students with the problems we diagnosed through the test, and we provide links to web pages with exercisses, or create remedial exercises for them if we cannot find them on the web.They complete these exercises on their own because they also have to complete the requirements of the course in terms of architecture or urban planning content. This helps them to put into practice what they are learning with the remedial exercises. If they pass this course, they will go to the second course with the students who were exempted from the first one. Comenius project

Me and Isabel Neves (also a partricipant in this baw - she is actually the one who spread the word to me) we are in the year two of a project called \" Creating and reflecting images of the European in an expanded Europe\" . In the year one, we were eight countries involved: Germany - the coordinator school, and then a school in each of the following countries: Portugal, Spain, France, Scotland, Poland, Romania and Turkey. We applied for the second year but unfortunetely we lost Turkey and Scotland is in stand - by (money problems with national agency). The get-to-know each other reality is extremely rewarding, as we, the portuguese, tend to create images of the others, that projects like these (or even this baw 08) is excellent to modify... Last year, we worked on the images the partners had on us: we prepared, realised and worked on data from a quizz with 20 questions on each country. 100 students per school answered the quizz and so each school worked on the results of 700 answered quizzes. The idea was to share and reflect in the images the others have on us. We organised a booklet with all the information and promoted discussion in class on the subject, mainly portuguese, english and french lessons. This year, we are working on what we think of the others: we are preparing images taken from Internet, litterature, newspapers, touristic brochures, that will be sent to the other partners and everyone will have the chance to accept or refuse - explaining why - the image / accusation. In the end we will hopefully have a manual with the stereotypes and the comments made by each country.Next year, we will work on recent history and important dates of our recent history, like 1974 for the portuguese and the revolution. We plan on a timeline where everyone will state what was life like in each country on the date selected. The project will end with a ceremony in Hannover, home of the coordinator school. It has been a wonderful experience... If you want to know more , I\'ll work with Isabel tomorrow on the way to post the links to our Comenius section in our Moodle page and the links to the blog and the site of the project. I don´t know if it easyfor them to understand it. I can´t speak Spanish, but I can read itquite well. When I was in college I used to read articles and books inSpanish. Speaking, however, is a different story. I understand a littleof spoken Spanish. I guess because Brazil is surrounded by Spanish speaking countries and we are exposed to the language through TV and other media, it is easier for us to understand them than for them to understand Portuguese (at least from my experience). I think Portuguese intonation makes it difficult for them to understand it. People who speak other languages see lots of similarities. I had afriend in Washington who learned Spanish and then Portuguese. She told me Portuguese had \"****ed up with her Spanish.\" It might really mix upthings. Abraços JA

Evelyn Izquierdo #1039 (Response to #1026) 01/20/2008	Dear Joao and Angelika: Spanish and Portuguese, as Italian, Romanian and French are Romance languages. They are all evolutions of Latin. That\'s why most of them have the same root (or base form) in their words. It\'s easy for us to understand and read some words in Portuguese, but we don\'t speak it. Same thing happens with Italian and French. It\'s easier for us to understand the written form than the spoken one. However, if we have studied a second Romance language it\'s much easier to understand them, phonetically. In secondary schools all Venezuelans study English a foreign language for 5 years; while, Italian, French and Latin (and Greece in some schools) are only languages studied by those high school students who choose the humanities area. We don\'t study Portuguese as a second language, however it\'s becoming very popular lately and more people have shown interest in this language. Brazil is very close to us and the commercial relationships have been increasing in the last years. We also have a huge Portuguese community in Venezuela. I guess, the study of Portuguese as a second language is coming soon. I really love it! It\'s so fun observing a conversation between a Venezuelan and a Portuguese here.
