Dear All,

We are starting Week 6, the last week of what has beena fantastic journey. How has it gone by so fast? Well, the wonderful empathy, warmth, openness, experience and knowledge sharing... has been so intense that it seems like we started last week.

Week 6: Blended learning. Wrap-up: Conclusions andevaluation. Graduating as a Webhead in ActionIn Week 6, we will focus on "blended learning". Join Aiden Yeh, and Rita Zeinstejer Mon. Feb 19 at 13:00 GMT, at Alado for a discussion on "blended learning": combining online activities and projects with face-to-face learning

Please add your name in the Database to tell us that you are attending this session. http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/baw08/database

The suggested readings for this week are related toour topic, and can be discussed in our forum at: http://www.hostingphpbb.com/forum/baw08.html

Since this is the last week of our e-workshop, we would appreciate your reflections on your overall impressions of this 6-week workshop, what you've achieved, and what you plan to do with your newly-acquired know-how. Post your reflections to our BaW-08 wiki: http://baw08participants.pbwiki.com/Reflections

During the week we will get ready for the graduation ceremony to take place at Worldbridges (http://webheadsinaction.org ). Time to be announced.

It is also time to complete an evaluation of thesession for the EVO coordination team which will helpto plan for the 2009 EVO sessions. The link will besent during the week.

We would like to remind you that our YG, wiki, blog, forum, etc. will remain available, and the discussion can go on :-)

This is all for now.

Have a great week and... keep in touch!

sorry about this,

after keeping up with all the communications but very little action, wanted to reflect, but wiki asks for password. i must have lost something somewhere. anyway, thank you for everything. this was my second time and i moved a bit further than the last time. unfortunately i'm a person who needs to have the info and understanding before attempting the hands-on. i have started a pbwiki for one of my courses, but still experimenting and shy to share yet. maybe later. thanks again and great job to all of you.

Hi Marie,

The password for the wiki is: bawpart

Don´t worry, everyone goes at his/her own pace. What's important is not giving up :-)

Btw, there's a mistake in my welcome message about the day for the live session. It is on Tuesday not Monday as I wrote.

Cheers,

Hello,

This is an irritating question and I'm sorry I need to ask. Is there any chance of getting a letter from someone to say that I took part in this session? I need something like this for my professional development folder, as I have to be able to document that I have taken part in professional educational development. (This is a requirement for the Polish Minstry of Education, for teachers) Bureaucracy is such that simply presenting a blog etc. is not enough. ("Ours not to reason why..") I feel very bad asking as I haven't managed to finish all the assignments, but very much want to, slowly, when I have a bit more time. I managed weeks 3 and 4 better as we had a break between semesters then, but now it's a new semester and I'm struggling with deadlines and lots of marking...

Best wishes

Hello,

I join in with Melanie's request. In Russia we have the same reqirements for teachers. I would be very grateful if I could get a certificate of attendance. This will be very helfil to me in my work situation. I am lagging behind Because many things are new for me and I have to get a more closer look at somethings. But I am planning to finish the assignments step by step later on. I am currently doing Hot Potatoes exercises for My Students in Cultural Studies class

Thanks,

Natalia

Hi, Melanie and Natalia!

As you know, these EVO workshops aren't credited courses, so there isn't any official certificate. However, we do upload a certificate of participation during the Graduation session and that's the only thing that Daf and I have used over the years on a couple of situations like yours.

Hugs, Teresa

Hi all,

I'd like to offer a Graduation Gift in advance before all the delicious food arrives and this is in particular for our Excel Queen (aka Tere).

Blist is a lovely looking modern spreadsheet and you can do wonders with it and very quickly. I've been setting up different ones for my learners and it really is intuitive. Uploading of images is great and you just move your mouse over it in the speadsheet and the whole image appears. It's in beta and other features are coming but it already rocks for me :-))

Have a look at the video and get a blist :-) http://blog.blist.com/index.php/2008/01/30/blist-demo-08-launch-video/

Dear Moira,

Thank you for such a wonderful Graduation Gift! The "Excel Queen (aka Tere)" marvelled at the blist presentation. What a tool! And what great features!

:-) Maybe you could share with us some of the ways you've been using it with students so we can include it in our "Applications of Tools" wiki page.

Hi Teresa,

So far, I have been using Blist to gather in one place all the things I need for the many learners I have. So this includes normal 'Excel' type things such as attendance, marks of different types and coefficients for university students with comments etc.. I'm also adding the blogs, wikis, pages etc created collaboratively and individually and uploading documents such as assignments and corrected homework and tracking the individual learners (i.e. completed, to do, etc). Sub lists or lenses can be created and visuals such as pie charts or histograms of the input I add are just a question of a click and hey presto. The visual aspect (pictures, icons and colours) is really appealing to me rather than a dry flat Excel sheet. An individual record of each student with all information is just a matter of a click too. All of this can be shared with individuals or groups by invitation email but at the moment, they can only read and cannot contribute to it.

This will be a feature in the near future. There are also features such as 'Review' and 'Discussion' coming soon too.

My university learners are using this to collect all their own research and data for reports and projects to be done within their field of study with specific objectives and deadlines. They started recently and today went on holiday for two weeks, so time will tell how they exploit this tool to the full in May/June.

I have seen that you can make widgets of some of the data and embed it in your blog or site but I haven't got that far yet :-) I'm also starting to use this right now to gather personal development information together. Let's see if I'm disciplined enough to do it for myself :-)

Hugs

Hi

I’m afraid I won’t be able to attend the graduation! I’ll be on vacation from Saturday. I’ll go to the north of my country (Argentina). This place is quite off the beaten track, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to find an internet connection. It’s a pity, because even though I haven’t written many emails, I’ve learned a lot through the readings and the weekly activities.

Hmmm, I see nothing at http://singidunum.pbwiki.com/FrontPage, tryingin both Mozilla and IE, and with my VPN both in and out. I mean I see the wiki, but no pics :-( what am I doing wrong ? ;-)

Speaking of gifts, Ibrahim in Tajikistan has created one especially for this group. He's been in touch with me about it, and mentioned that he has connectivity problems (actually power outages) that sometimes prevent him from contacting this group. I haven't see that his message has appeared, so I agreed in that case to post for him. Ibrahim has made a very nice badge for all the folks here, which you are all highly qualified to post on your blogs and wikis. I put the full sized picture here: http://www.webheads.info and http://webheads.info These redirect to two different places, actually, so if you can't get one (because you are behind a country wide proxy firewall, for example) then try the other.

At the moment the above page has the full sized graphic but the links on that page point here: http://www.ibrahimrustamov.com/baw08/ This is the badge sized graphic with the code for putting it on yourblog or web page. Ibrahim was concerned that this site is sometimes unreliable, so I agreed to host it in one of the webheads areas. When that happens it will still be available at the links above. Meanwhile get it from Ibrahim's site.

Looking forward to seeing you at the graduation. Remind me, when is it exactly?

Dear Mary,

I am sure it is. I was in two minds about that video anyway, since women outnumber men in BaW (or at least that's my impression). I didn't have much time, so I just resorted to good old YouTube for solutions.

Anyway, I am proud that I can now do things with wikis that I never thought I would be able to do. Thanks for watching it.

had a peek to your wiki and enjoyed the video, pics and music there. Belgrade is on my list of the places to visit in the near future. It was my capital too years ago and your wiki stirred up lots of beautiful memories from that period. I hope we meet some day - there aren't many of us webheads in our part of the world. Thanks for sharing this.

Draga Saša,

You brought tears to my eyes. I feel the same about what we once had.The borders are where the heart sets them. I was in Nova Gorica when Iwas four years old. Our car broke down there while we were on our wayto Italy. A kind lady took in us as guests, while her husband repairedour car. I remember the people, but not the town.

I would love to meet you face to face and in our case it isn't too hard to organise. If you decide to come to Belgrade, let me know. You are right, there aren't many webheads in this part of the world (yet). Sorry I never answered the nice welcome note you sent in the first week, but as it was not in the BaW digest and as I was completely new here at the time, I found it some two weeks later. Thanks.

Daf, Tere and I made a tasty collaboration project for the Tapped In carnival 2002 celebrating Webheads in Action We cooked our favorite dishesand took pictures, and made homepages, linking to each other. And, chatting a lot in between with help and advice for the process. We did not have smart Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, or wikis, or Flickr and slideshare albums by then, just plain HTML and digital photos, uploaded by FTP. Hello!

I'm Alfia from Russia. I've been a lurker most of the time, but I did learn a lot . Different tools which were used by participants are familiar to me now, because I followed the discussions. I wish I had done more. But still I am glad I've been a part of this wonderful group... Here the link to my small blog as a small graduation gift. http://fromrussia-alfia.blogspot.com/

Hello Alfia, your Russian blinis look really good. And, don't worry about all those things you did not make this time; now you have a whole bunch of examples to dig into whenever you're read, and what is even more important, you have found virtual colleagues willing to share and to ask for help and support. Congratulations with becoming just another webhead,

I'm sorry I couldn't make it to the Graduation ceremony. I'd have liked to be there with you but there was a power cut this morning +all the family was at home for lunch so it was impossible for me to get ready in time and go somewhere else.

What happens now? Please tell me we'll keep in touch here. I'll miss all this a lot!

Hi, dear all,

I am very sorry not to have joined you today for your grad party..., it was my last day in Rosario with Jane Petring, who came to visit me on Friday and stayed through the weekend, to head back for Buenos Aires a while ago. I've just come back from the bus station, where we hugged bye and until next time...

We spent a fab time sharing sights, meals, friends. And we delighted in exchanging and comparing "idiomatic expressions" both in English and Spanish, since one of her aims now is attending Spanish classes here in Argentina to improve it...--and I can tell you her Spanish is GREAT!!! Besides, Jane is an incredibly versatile human being, "game" for everything and anything...;-)

We´ve taken several photos, which we'll upload to Flicker and to her personal blog she'll soon share with you.

I am sure you've spent a wonderful time partying together..., and here go my CONGRATS and my WELCOME message to all new members of this priceless population, hoping they find it as valuable, as illuminating, as enriching and as FUN as those who can attest so ;-)

My warmest hugs,

Rita

We had a lovely time at the virtual Graduation. There'll be a recording for sure. In the meantime, take a look at the Grad page. Hope you enjoy it! http://baw-08.pbwiki.com/graduation

Hello everyone !

It's a pity to say good bye. It's been a wonderful learning experience for me. Without all of you I would have never made it. So many times I felt frustrated and tired but then like a little sunray there was always someone who came to the rescue and Skyped me and said, Hi. How are you there?. Wow, I felt brave and energetic.I am terribly lucky to have been part of the group. I have made wonderful friends, learnt many new things and English words! Yet there are still some I do not understand. I have no idea how to custutomize my cheese ( I wish I knew what cheese is meant, I love Dutch cheeses though) and how to tell a "gadget" from a "widget" ! But I am learning ! So If you have the cheese I can customise for you just let me know.

One thing I learnt - there is a wonderful community of people - webheads- open, caring and knowledgeable. Ain't I lucky to meet you?

Thank you all.

Special thanks to Daf, Teresa, Sharon and all co-moderators for patience, happy moods and care.

We won't say goodbye, because we'll be here tomorrow and every day until BaW09. So we'll only say "See you!". Remember, tomorrow is only the first day of life after BaW08!

I'm glad you learned a lot and made friends all over the world. It's fabulous what these Web 2.0 tools can do to make like-minded people come together to learn collaboratively, isn't it? Daf and I also had a wonderful time and were helped by a great group of collaborators, our mods and guest speakers, who gave their best."Thank you" for being with us these 6 weeks and in the Graduation ceremony today! I enjoyed talking to you!

Hi everyone,

Since we all use Yahoo Groups to receive messages from this group, I thought I would let you know about a free service I found called Grouply. It is the bestway I've discovered to access messages from all my Yahoo Groups. You can use this link to sign up: http://www.grouply.com/register.php?r=228193 . I am a member of so many groups that I found it very difficult to keep up with all of them. Grouply makes it easy. You can search and browse across all your groups at once and even view a cross-group event calendar. You can have one Smart Digest email (which I love) sent to you at the end of each day that summarizes what's going on across all your groups, highlighting what's interesting to you and hiding what's not.

I've found Grouply to be a huge time-saver for me and I thought it would also be helpful for others. Enjoy! (not sure whether I got the info from anybody in THIS wonderful community, sorry if that is so..., I can only confirm I find it useful myself!)

Dear All,

You may find it strange to have received several messages today from several days back. This is the explanation: They were held as "possible" spam in the YG and Daf approved them yesterday, I believe. However, you may also have noticed that we were receiving them previously with the indication of possible spam, but I believe that the text wasn't complete in some cases. Very strange!!! Must be cyber gremlins!!!!! We have no idea why several of us have had our messages considered as "possible" spam and we haven't found a way to avoid that either. It's a totally new situation for us. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hola,

Tomorrow I will be flying from Canada to South America--Argentina, Chile and Peru--where I will be spending two to three months studying Spanish and travelling (I have a long-awaited sabbatical this session). After using blogs with my students for several years, I just decided it would be a good idea for me to try writing my own in a second language, and at the same time record some of my impressions and adventures. So here is my new Spanish blog: http://misviajesyaventuras.blogspot.com/ I hope that some of you Spanish speakers and Latin American experts will give me a bit of advice on language or places to go along the way!

Hi JA and Isabel!

JA, of course I don't mind you using the tutorial, after all, web 2.0 and Webheads are all about sharing, right? Your 21classes baby blog looks great, and I think chinswing is a great way to start, let me know what students thought of it. And later we can have our students interact, what you think?

Isabel, this is what I did: first I took screen shots using the keyboard button "print screen". If you click this button, a shot of your screen is taken, so you can go to Paint Brush and past it (Ctrl + V). In Paint Brush I added the red rectangles and saved the images (one by one) as JPEG (smallerthan .bmp). After working with each image, I uploaded them to splashcast (splashcast.net). Then, splashcast gives me the option of adding the voice there, so you don't need to record using Audacity, you just choose the picture to which you want to add voice, press record, and speak. If you're not satisfied, you record again. When you're done, you publish your splashcast and get the html code to embed it.

Hope to have helped!

Kindest regards from Brazil,

Ronaldo

Excellent work! Your tutorial is easy to follow and graphic. I am interested in the same questions that Isabel posted. Following your tutorial I signed up, it is a simple way to have your students work together. If you do have a PPP presentation, could you share it with me to try to record the voice in Spanish? I made a PPP for Blogger, it is the blog that most of you recomend for beginers but I loved 21 classes! I have not got around to add voice to it, adding sound is a total new skill for me.

Btw, I made the player larger because you selected the smalllest. It won´t affect your code because I just changed the code for the player on the wiki. If you are using blogger or motime, you only need togo to the html editor to copy the code.

Hello Mary,

If you are using Wordpress, this is the code YRME9355MY

How I got it? Copied the whole embed code to word and deleted all the extra stuf and put this between brackets. The code is the capital letters coming right after the /s/. If you just copy the letters without deleting the rest it won´t work. You have to manually delete everything. I hope it works.

Hi Carlos,

Your Splashcast is great and it made want to visit Portugal even more! I just have one tip, there is an option of making the pictures move automatically, which is very useful when you are using a connected narration, as in your case. After you edit everything and click "publish",in the option "playback settings" you choose "Sequential, Auto-Advance".

Olá Ronaldo,

Thank you for your kind words and tip... To be absolutely honest I saw the option but I didn't understand what it meant so I picked one of them, by complete hasard...

Then , that's me... I always pick the wrong one when I have two options... It's like in the supermarket, I take the smallest line to pay ant it allways take me longer than the other one... I'll go there and change it!

Thanks for your kind words and feel free to come to Portugal whenever you want to... You'll be wellcomed...

Hi Mary,

Like Ronald said, in splashcast you can record as much as you want to. I don´t know how you did it. I do it like this. First I creat the visual show. I upload all the pictres, tag them and consider the show done. After you finish the show, click on edit and you will see a window with all your pictures and an icon for recordin, you will have just to press it and start recording. If you are happy wiht it, save and move to the next one. I hope it works. If you need some help, skype me and I will be happy to help you. my id is joseantoniook

Yes, JA, I had followed all the steps you mention but even so the recording was interrupted when I played it. I guess it is as Ronaldo says, a problem with my internet connection. It's been raining here in Rosario and when that happens, my telephone and my internet connection become erratic, God knows why. Both the tel. company and the internet server keep blaming each other and neither gives me a solution. Today I tried again and, before recording myself, I left the window open for a while (to give it time to digest the order :D) and itworked fine.

Thanks for your help. You people are wonderful!

Dear All,

I was wondering if you have already used hot-potatoes. It i a great, very easy software to use. I have used it in the past - mainly to review vocabulary - and the students loved it.

Here are some of my examples (very simple ones) http://englishpractice.com.sapo.pt/cloze/1.htm http://englishpractice.com.sapo.pt/hotpot/arm.htm http://englishpractice.com.sapo.pt/hotpot/face1.htm http://englishpractice.com.sapo.pt/hotpot/leg.htm http://www.geocities.com/navysternchen/presentperfect.html

Hi Natalia

Yes, HotPotatoes exercises work offline. When you cretae them, save them in your computer as html files, and you can then open them in your browser:

In Firefox: File/open file

In IE: File/ Open Browse

To edit your files you need to start Hot Potatoes applications and open the files you want to change. In that case, for example, if you want to finish a matching exercise, open JMatch, then open the *.jmt file you saved the first time.

Hi Mary,

I believe there are two aspects in your question. Creating a webpage and having a server. Exercise creators as proprofs, Script-O and quia store theexercises you create in their server, so, if you want to have all of them listed on the same place, you can create a webpage in places like geocities (I'm not very fond of it), googlepages (very easy to use), wizard.4teachers.org (never used), page flakes, sitekreator or a wiki and have the links to the exercises there.

Now, if you use an exercise creator that works off-line, but gives you the option of uploading html files to a server in order to have it online (like hotpotatoes), you will need a server too. If your school already pays for a server, try using that one (that's what I do with HP activities I create), but if that's not your case, there are some file hosts for free on the internet, like fileden.com

Hope to have helped (if not, Teresa will step in a few minutes =))

Kind regards from Brazil,

Ronaldo

--------------------

Dear Teresa,

Great exercise page! I love the exercises themselves and the way they are organized on the page.

Now I have a question (a very silly one, I'm afraid): I've been going through the reading in week 5 and, if I have understood it correctly, some of the sites give you the possibility of storing your exercises on their web site server. Now what happens if you want to store exercises you have created using different sites (as you have done) and you don't have a web site of your own? Should I create one? The only free one I know of is Geocities, and my experience of it last year wasn't very good. It was most of time very difficult to access.

I hope you can understand my question :-)

That is why I thought of all of you. Please can you help me? I've created 3 games with Matching Game Maker and Memory Game Makerfor a student of mine. He is 8. I wanted to embed them to my wiki and I couldn't, so I thought of linking them but I still can't. I've also opened an account in FileDen (Ronaldo's suggestion) but I don't know what I'm supposed to upload there. Every single file? Create a folder? Apart from that, I would like to know if there are more of these kind of games. I've been searching through Google, but it is taking forever and I don't have time right now. Dear Lore,

I can understand your frustration. I went through it last weekend. But once we master the tool, it's wonderful and ver gratifying to see such enthusiasm in our students. With Memory Maker I created a folder with the name of what I'm having students practice, such as classroom objects, school objects... And that is the folder that I uploaded to my server. Inside it you should have an .html file with the name of the folder Your URL for the link in your wiki or blog should look something like this. http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/school/memorygame/schoolobjects/schoolobjects.html I have my server http://64.71.48.37/teresadeca/ with a folder for "school" things. Inside I have a "memorymaker" for all the exercises created with that specific program. In turn, inside that I have a folder called "school objects", the name of that specific game, and the corresponding .html file. Hope this helps.I have never been able to get my "Matching Game Maker" games to work online, only in my computer. I can't figure out why. Don't forget to look at the links that Daf and Ramona sent. You can also take a look at the exercises I created. http://fwe3.motime.com/ Keep cool! Take it easy! You'll make it. :-)

Tripod allows you to upload a zip file and then it decompresses it for you automatically, so you will beable to add the link to the wiki. This is a tutorial I created for a participant of aTESOL course who had the same problem you are having trying to upload HP exercises. I don´t know how if the Tripod interface has changed because I am not using it anymore, but this might give you some light on how the process is: http://dafnegonzalez.com/tutorials/tripodtutorial.htm

I wanted to thank you for your kind comments and for encouraging me. I've tried with another server now because FileDen didn't allow me to upload files with 'html'extension. I googled hosts and found 'Boxtr'. I have uploaded the file in zip and I could link it to my wiki...but I have to unzip it first... so I will keep on trying, just uploading all the files instead of a zip folder and I think it will work. As regards the links, thank you!!! I will delicious them and explore them a little bit more. As soon as I can manage to do what I want with my wiki, I'll let you know the link. Thanks again!

Hi Claudia!

The first link in your wiki isn't working because there are two links together: http://englishcorner.pbwiki.com/www.geocities.com/carril_claudia To fix the links follow these steps:

1- click edit page

2.1 - in classic mode, simply replace the wrong link for the following: Visit our website">www.geocities.com/carril_claudiaVisit our website

2.2 - in point-and-click mode, you select "visit our website", then click the add link button (with a globe and a chain), a pop-up window will open, in "link type" choose "url", then type "www.geocities.com/carril_claudia"

3- click "save"

That's it. I hope it helps!

Nergiz, don't worry, you don't need to know if I teach English or Spanish. I've taught Spanish but I always say to my students that I'm not a teacher of Spanish but English. I do my best and try to explain everything, but I try to apply what I know about teaching English into Spanish. Luckily last year I attended a course on Contrastive Analysis (differences between English and Spanish) and I think I'm more prepared now to teach Spanish. If you need anything just ask me, I don't mind. I will check at home for a link to download worksheets to teach Spanish (I used to use them to teach my students).

Eluminate can be used for free but there is a limit in the number of pleople, but as I'm going to be teaching my husband and my brother in-law, I can use it. About onestopenglish, I will attach the files to the wiki so that my students have access to them easily, and they know where to find the material if they need it again.

Great we are in the same boat, let's keep in touch as you say to see how this works. See you around,

Natalia, I won't be teaching Spanish but you and Nergiz seem to be interested in it... I may give it a try but as I told her I've taught Spanish before (f2fand on-line with YM) but I'm not an expert. I use my knowledge from pedagogy on how to teach English to try and teach Spanish. I will see if I pluck up the corage and teach Spanish on-line. Anyway, I'll let you know about my on-line teaching experience. I'm really looking forward to it, I have ideas that I want to put into practice (all from EVO Session: BaW, EVO VideoSession and Web 2.0 for ESP).

Hope to find you in Skype to see how you're doing. See you around,

Lessons can be exported to run on CD or on a website. They can also be imported into a number of course management systems such as Blackboard and Moodle.

Have a look and see what Courselab has to offer.

Wow, CourseLab looks fab. The examples of courses on the Showcase page were nicely done and offer a variety of differing applications for this tool. I'm going to have to take my time exploring this one. Thanks a lot for bringing it to our attention.

I also had a little trouble, but when I went to the website that is linked when the code fails - it worked. I put together a "course" and uploaded it to our school Moodle installation and it worked well. But seems to take a lot of bandwidth and loads very slowly.

Hi dear all:

I'm trying to create a Voicethread to add it to my blog, but I have problems uploading pictures. When I upload a picture, it seems to be too small; it is located up and to the left. There is a blank space below, and on the right. And, if I make the picture bigger, Voicethread does not upload it. What am I supposed to do? Am I doing something wrong? What is the recommended size? Would you kindly help me, please?

Thanks in advance,

Evelyn

Hey Evelyn,

apparently, you're using a small picture. If you use a big picture (biggerthan voicethread's screen), it is automatically resized, but if you use apicture that is smaller than the screen, these blank spaces appear. One way to make your small pictures bigger is through picasa (you can download itfrom http://tinyurl.com/2k44gp). Once there, you click on the picture, then click "export", and in the resize option, choose higher pixels. It loses resolution, but it gets bigger...

I hope it helps!

Hi guys!

I was exchanging emails with Zsófi, and as I recommended Evoca (www.evoca.com) to her, to upload recordings, I learned that Evoca now records skype calls. I remember in the webheads list some people commenting about difficulties in recording skype calls with audacity (I never tried that, but apparently it's hard to record both ends of the conversation), and others having to download echoing programs... well, maybe this could be asolution. All you have to do is add evoca as your skype contact and add itto your conversation... has anyone tried that out yet? If so, how did it go?If not, let's try? Would anyone like to be my guinea pig partner? If so,give me a call - ronaldo.lima.junior

Dear all,

I know you are really busy getting ready for Sunday, but I have a few questions on Second Life. I went there with BaWers last Saturday and since then I have been there a couple of times on my own. I am fascinated by it, and I would really like to explore its teaching potential more, but I am still totally ignorant on how it all works. So here are my questions:

1. Where is my "Home"? I believe I haven't got one at the moment, so how do I get one?

2. I have got a free account. Is there a way I can earn some Linden dollars without upgrading my subscriptions? Do I need to have money at all?

3. If I teleport to a new location, how do I know I am not "intruding" or "trespassing"?

4. Is there a code of behaviour I should know about?

5. Can I observe classes somewhere in SL?

Thanks in advance

Hugs

Hello Natasha,

I'm one of the veteral webheads and have just been reading along a bit this year.I'm also very interested in Second Life , and your questions are both relevant and interesting. I'll try to ask some of this, and others would probably follow up with some more information.

1. Your home is - Info Island. Until you purchase land or join a project somewhere that would allow you to land on their estate. However, you can choose to land on many other locations that the trivial Info island! Search for interesting new places to explore, eventually save useful SLURLs that you wish to visit again. SLURLs are simply browser based links that will take you straight to the SL spot of choice (unless the owner does not allow traffic or the sim is too crowded).

You could do for a long time with no Linden, on a free ride. You could take quizzes and get paid, in many casino style setttings. Some land owners would love having you around to make their palce look populated and generate more visitors, paying you small fees for dirty dancing, or just watching (girls tend to dance while guys are looking, don't ask me why, and I find such activities quite boring. I have a friend who work as virtual escort, with her second avatar, and then hand over money for her first avatar, the one with a more professional presence to protect. This fine lady paid for her SL wedding and honeymoon this way, and had lots of fun. But don't feel obliged to play along with the adults; there are lots of good freebiestores - just ask around and people would help you find some to a start. You can also start creating stuff, in public sandboxes.

Regarding teleport to unknown locations - I had some really surprising experiences in my first days. Although most land owners are very open to guests, I found out that I was not welcomed just anywhere, for more reasons. In some cases, people were interrupted in ongoing activities that were not meant to be open, or with too little room for the occasional traveller; each sim has limited space for traffic as well as for objects.

My best advice is to get yourself some good friends to connect with and learn from. Whenever you get into a good conversation, open the person's profile, see if you like making friends, and send the guy an invitation; they're almost always accepted! This way you could also discover Groups to join, and some people share Good locations to visit, in their profile. This is not FBI - this is a normal way to make social networking happen! Once you have found some teacher friends with Education oriented groups, you would start getting invitations for classes and other events.

Hope this helps. And, when in SL, look up Friends. I'm sure that we have some SL list of Webheads avatars around in a corner!

yours,

SusNy Foss (in SL :-)

Excellent job! I could access the class page from both: the URL and from the blog itself. I really enjoyed doing the exercise on collocations, much more motivating than in our old traditional way. Hi Maru!

Thanks a lot. Since I am a complete beginner here, every little compliment means a lot. I could have created better quizzes, but there was very little time so I concentrated on the form rather than thecontent.

I had the same problem with ScriptO. I followed someone else's link and it led me to the sign-up page and then to my own quiz. This might be a huge problem for our students. Pity.

I must say I like Proprofs best. Quia is fantastic, but it is not free of charge.

Hi Natasa!

Congrats on your wiki with a collection of exercises. Sometimes I too create the same thing with different tools to test them. Concerning Hot Potatoes, you have to follow what Mary suggested ("go to"File" and click on "Save" or"Save as" to store it in my computer. Then I go to "File" again and click on"Create webpage""), this way you will create some html files. Then, you will need a server, a host, to upload these html files. The host will generate urls, then you just link the url of the first exercise page (don't forget to link the other pages, in case the exercise has more than one page) in your wiki, just as you have done with Script-O, quia and classmaker. Here are two free file hosts:

Hope this helps you!

Hi Ronaldo,

I am glad you liked my wiki. It is amazing to think that five weeks ago I couldn't do any of those things.

But I still have a long way to go. I have tried to upload my HotPotatoes file to every single file host you and Mary mentioned, but the file just refused to open (I did save it to my computer first). Could the fact that I am using Mozilla and not IE be the problem? Or is it something else?

In any case, I can print the exercises or burn them onto a CD.

Sorry and thanks.

Hey Natasa!

We all have a long way to go, after all, every day new things are inventedand if we don't want to be left behind, we have to explore... you're just onthe right track!

About HP, one thing you have to be careful is that when you save the exercise, HP saves it with a particular extension (according to the kind of exercise created), and when you ask to create a web page, ti gives you an html file, and that's the one you need to upload, ok? Olá Ramona,

Thanks for your kind words! It pleased me a lot to make these tools and specially tobe able to use them in class. I've been doing some beginners activities as this year my only french class is from CEF (You have probebly heard of them - the Minister's project Novas Oportunidades - it's beyond one's imagination ). The best way has been Internet, not in such advanced tools (I didn't know them) but in more simple things like word documents with form boxes to fill, and games easily generated. I plan to use most of what I've done and I expect to have the impact you described.

Thanks again! I'm pleased to know that I did it properly!

I manage to end week 5 activity, when I reread, I disocvered I made more than I was asked to...

I left a post about the reading that I enjoyed a lot as, besides lots of hints, it was quite practical and useful!

About the live presentation, the feeling is more or less the same:

quite up to the point, exploring each site potential and quite useful, done in an enviroment that seduces me a lot: elluminate sessions. In fact, it was a pity that I, personally and professionnaly had such a bad week, as I hadn't the chance to make the most of each of the tasks. Nevertheless, I did my best and today I just found some more! For reading, I created a Script-O quizz maker with the course ID 2393, available in http://www.readingmatrix.com/quizmaker/classes/?id=2393.

Again, it's in French but I do plan to use it with my students... make it in English, although interesting, wouldn't be reusable... As for writing, I think voicethreads can be a good start: suing images + sound to launch ideas for writing, although If I had the time, I would have liked to try something as planning your writing, some thing I find very useful for portuguese students as, even in maternal language, they do have problems in planning before executing... In the old paper and pen situation I frequently make them build a plan before writing and it's amazing how better results you get. I have a voicethread built in the wiki pages that could be easily reused for writing purposes, specially in foreign language where tasks tend to be simpler and demanding an less complex performance...

Listening - I started preparing the podcast on Harry Potter and ended it, as I stated before, and it's surely is going to be used in my class!

Speaking - Chinswing (sorry! but I find in it uncountable different usages: There is one I built on my last vecations ( for intermediate students that I can't, unfortunatelu, reuse as I only got beginners this year ( and what a bunch of beginners - CEF - my portuguese collegues will certainly understand me!- it's a long story). Anyway, the Chinswing link is http://www.chinswing.com/pages/discussion.aspx?id=4f0bc676-b359-4a7d-86b7-3ef52336f3c5

Vocabulary - Another new experience! Went to Class Marker, found very interesting and I built a vocabulary test on image + writting down words with a hint on the nimber of letters as it is planned again to be used. You can find it in http://www.classmarker.com/teacher/classroom.php?id=6286 The title is "Qu'est-ce que c'est?", then Class Marker, Free Text. I had no time left for online sheet, although I plan to go for it during the week. That's it!

Now, it's time for old software: handwriting correcting papers...

Have a nice week 6! (I can't believe it's the last one!)

Thank you all

Hi ramona and all!

Trying hard to carry out my assignment for week 5. Lagging behind, as usual!! I've only experimented with Script-O!, which has both a free version and a professional one. First I browsed different activities available on the site and I could just "look at" the audio tutorial. I couldn't hear anything due to problems with my sound. I managed to create a class page and devise two quizzes: a matching exercise and a multiple choice single answer. Unluckily, I could only attach the first one to my class page. Then I could link the online class to my blog in multiply: http://silviaepeco.multiply.com/ This is the URL of my second exercise, the one I can't attach to the class page.

From that point of view here are my comments: Your voice at Voicethread came in chunks but the images loaded rather fast. Splashcast had a better audio quality but it took a long time to upload the pictures. Qlipboard had no sound at all!! You can have more than one image. Jose Antonio has a PPP presentation with Qlipboard at http://joseantoniook.edublogs.org I re visited it and the sound problem there did not show up, I guess the secret lies in uploading the PPP presentations to YouTube.

Hi Marina

To create a matching exercise with HotPotatoes with pictures do the following:

1. Store in a folder in your computer all the images that you need; they shouldn't be too large, let's say max 100 pixels width and height smaller if possible;

2. Don't use more than 6/7 items in one page, otherwise it will be difficult to do the exercise; all images should fit in one screen, without the need to scroll down the page.

3. Save your Hotpotatoes files in the same folder where you placed the images, to make it easier;

4. Open Jmatch, give it a title, then insert the images on the leftcolumn (insert picture from local file); on the right column write thename of the object/item you placed on the left column; for example, insert a picture of a pen on the left and write pen on the right column,5. Do the same for the other lines (2,3,4, 5, 6); use the black arrowson the left to include more items

6. Save the file, no spaces, no special charactres (file/save as); the program will give the file the extension *.jmt

7. Create a webpage (File/Create web page); you have 3 possibilities: standard (it creates a dropdown) drag and drop and flashcards. I advise you save the jmt file with 3 different names when you export, for example matchXXX1.html, matchXXX2.html, matchXXX3.html and see the differences.

8. When you finish saving, choose View the exercise in your browser.

9. You should then upload all the images and html file to a web server to have it online.

10. These are the basics; you can later try the Options/configure output to change colours and other settings.

You can see an example here:http://users.prof2000.pt/mfr/class10f_0405/match_inventions.html"> http://users.prof2000.pt/mfr/class10f_0405/match_inventions.html

Dear Zsofi,

I just remembered that 6+ years ago, during my first online course about integrating the Internet in the classroom, I created a project about New York City, a city I love. Several of the links are no longer available (no wonder!!! 6 years in Internet time is the stone age!!!!!!), but there are enough links working to show you a different type of activity.

Trying to persuade you further to come visit Portugal, here are two photostories for you to enjoy! You will love the country and the partying, as you can see in Rita's photostory. This is what happens when Webheads get together.

Hi, everyone!

One of my 5th grade classes had a CALL lesson this morning and really enjoyed the memory games I made for them. They evn noticed a detail I hadn't. In the game with the octopus and fish, the octopus turns red when the make a mistake and green when the make a match. They were really excited! http://fwe3.motime.com/

CALL lesson 3 has a simple voiceboard tutorial that they understood easily. http://call07.motime.com/ . They loved the voiceboard and were amazed to see their message online at the click of the mouse.

Maru, they left a voice message for you.

Anyone is welcome to visit both blogs and leave a voice message in one of the voiceboards (each message goes to both) for tomorrow morning's class. Please don't forget to say your name and country. TIA.

Dear Lore, Ronaldo, Sylvia and Maru,

Thank you for leaving messages in the voiceboard and blogs. They were a success! A couple, including my intro and both of Maru's messages, are quite low when heard in a classroom, even with good speakers and sound at maximum. I had to repeat the sentences, but the voiceboard is great for that, because when we click on the Play button, it goes into Pause. When I record again, I hope to remember to hear the recording before clicking on Send.

Today's class also flipped with the interactive exercises and all of them volunteered to go to the computer and play each game. Towards the end of class, they wrote a message and Francisco recorded it. He's a student who started out with many difficulties and is making a fabulous recovery both in class and with an extra recovery lesson a week. I was amazed that he volunteered to record. Kids can really surprise us. :-)

Hugs all, Teresa

Hello everyone !

I´m back from my summer holidays. I´ve been away forthe last two weeks so I haven´t followed the activities and now I´ve started working at school but I´m ready to do my best for week 6. Iguess I´ll catch up with the things I missed as from next week.

I´ve learned a lot during the first three weeks of this workshop and I mean to browse all the material and to try to use the tools we´ve been learning about in my teaching practice.

It´s been a great experience to learn with all of you even if I know I´m a slow learning I´m always trying to move forward. Thanks for your coaching and support.

By the way, do we need to register for tomorrow´s presentation ?

There was a problem with the format of the presentations. Alado works well with web pages and PPTconverted to HTML or uploaded to the Alado server. Classes have just begun in Brazil and I am looking for international

students from two of my advanced classes (one class has 14 teenagers and the

Dear All,

I am so sorry I have been so quiet tis week. I have come to portugal for family bureaucracy and "saudades" issues! :-) I am having less access to the computer as I had thought. I am sorry about that. I have browsed my emails and noticed that I have recieved a lot of wonderfuk messages from some of you. I will answer them individually when I get back online. I just want to wish you a great week and I hope we continue this exchange of perspectives, ideas and knowledge - which I call learning generosity - after the end of the EVO sessions. Thank you all for your contributions. I have learned a lot from you all. Í would also like to take this chance to thank all the moderators I have worked with during this experience. They have been magnificient. I have learned a great deal from them all too. A very tight hugs to you all out there... although spread all over the place we are all united in cyberspace!

Hi Dear BaWers,

I miss you all so much and all the discussions and tools we talk about. I am overwhelmed with lesson plans and ideas for projects and it is getting difficult to catch with messages. I am sorry if I haven´t answered some of your messages properly. These days, time is become a really rare comodity for me. I always browse the e-mails, but just can´t find time to answer all the ones I would like to. For me, the BaW experience is always like this, more active participation at the beginning and lurking at the end.

Thank you all for all your kind words in relation to my blogs and other tools and for the many things you shared. This is not goodbye, because we will be together for the rest of the year. I just want to tell you that I am doing my share of lurking for now and how much I enjoyed spending these six weeks with you all.

Dear Bawers:

I share Jose Antonio's feelings. I have not gone yet to San Luis and I already miss you all. It will be a long weekend, from Friday to Sunday night, without hearing from you. It is stange, you have become close and dear to me over this weeks. I am glad for those of you who will meet f2f at N.Y. Congratulations! Visiting your sites today I found a surprise, I saw three voicethreads with my picture attached at the bottom and I had not visited there. I don't know how that happened, but I was glad to be part of your sites. =) I learned a lot from all of you, receive my deepest thanks. See you around!

Dear JA,

Don't worry about lurking, you've always been there to help us. I understand your situation and we are almost on the same boat. The whole year will be waiting for us to continue with the discussions and messages, so try to relax (as Tere has told me) and enjoy the ride. Hope to see you around (when you have time :))

Dear Maru,

I second Daf's words about you not being able to make it to the Graduation - your thoughts will be with us and ours with you - and also about your great work and commitment to BaW08. We know how hard it is to focus on everything that is going on in our lives. Kudos to you!!! :-)

Enjoy your weekend!

Hugs, Teresa

Dear JA,

You've done much more than your share and we're all very grateful to you.

You are a very caring person and are always there to share your expertise.

But there are times when we all are forced to make our priorities and school

and schoolwork is a top priority. Our students deserve that.

Thank you very much for your fantastic collaboration! :-)

JA,

Thanks so much for all your help and support. It great to know that there we have colleagues like you to help shoulder the load. I know exactly where you are coming from as I, too, have had an extra heavy school workload since January (actually since Sept). Remember, first and foremost, the students come first! Pull back, regroup, and hopefully you will get a little balance back in your life:-)

Dear Tere, I think I never answer this message... I don't know if I got it to be honest. But today I have been racking my brains trying to think of a way of creating activities for an eight-year-old boy. I created a wiki and I thought it would be easier to create on-line activities. In fact, it is but I read all the messages, I went to the links but I needed something for young learners. That is when I remembered your memory game and going back to your message I found this one, isn't it weird!

It is like the third time that I read it because I didn't know how to embed it to the wiki. Now that I re-read your message, I'll go to one suggested by Ronaldo about servers and save it there. Hope it works. If you think of any other material that I can use, please tell me.

Thank you in advance,

Lore

Lore,

Last year I had a group of 8 year olds. I was a substitute teacher in an international school here in Lisbon. I made some interactive exercises for my YL's and you can find them on the blogs that I made for them: http://forcesandstructures.blogspot.com and http://choose-peace.blogspot.com . The kids loved the interactive exercises. I hope you find something that you can use;-)

The workshops sound great! and MSU is a lovely place. I had the opportunity to attend a TESOL Summer Institute there in 1991 for 6 weeks and I loved mystay. I wished I could go. Are you going?
