Second Life: Tour

On this page we will post important information for the tour we are preparing for Second Life. Tentative time for the tour: week 4 or 5

Immediate Steps

I have created a table in the YG database section for those interested in visiting Second Life. This is what you need to do if you want to be in the SL tour:

  • First of all, make sure your computer meets all the technical requirements:

http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php (special attention should be paid to the graphic card). If your system does not meet the requirements, you won´t be able to get to SL, or you will be frustrated if able to connect. I am making this clear to avoid frustrations ;-)

  • register in the SL site at

http://www.secondlife.com,

  • create your avatar

  • dowload the program

  • add yourself to the database in our YG

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/baw08/database

  • Take some time to go to the Orientation Island in SL, to get the basic skills (Orientation Island is the place you arrive once you create your avatar and connect to SL for the first time)

The first one shows you how to zoom in. This will help you read from the board more easily and also help you to hear the person speaking, by zooming in on their avatar.

This second one will help you to listen to the audio and video media files, by adjusting the volume levels and turning down the background / ambient sounds.

This one shows how you can join in pairs or groups, so that you only hear the people you are working with.

This one shows how you can change the volume of the other speakers or mute them. It also shows you how to order the list of active speakers so that they don't move around.

This one shows you how to create a notecard to take notes

This one shows how to copy notes from Second Life notecards into a Word document (if you want to keep copies of your notes outside of SL)

This one shows you how to share and pass notecards to other avatars / students.
